Cracks or splits in wood can be glued, providing the glued, providing the glue can be spread fully on the meeting surfaces. The glue should be the strongest obtainable if the trouble is not to recur. Avoid general purpose glues. Buy one intended for boats and follow the directions, as these glues are strong as well as water proof. If good penetration of the glue into the split is doubtful, screw across the joint, so the screw head comes inconspicuously on an inner surface. Always drill a clearance hole for the neck for the screw, then a smaller hole for the threaded part. Use a countersink bit to let the screw head in level. If a glued joint has come apart, does not put new glue on top of the old as it will not bond. Scrape through the old glue to expose wood fibers. It helps to draw a fine saw sideways across the wood to roughen it before regluing. Modern glue does not require tight cramping, but the surfaces have to be brought closely together. With framed furniture, such as a chair, rope tied across and twisted with a piece of wood to tighten it, can act as a cramp.

Start tacking the covering to the frame from the underneath. Do the back and front first, working outwards from the center. When this is satisfactory do the same at the tapered sides. Pull the covering tight over sharp corners, even out any creases and tack underneath. If the corners of the chairs are notched to fit legs, cut into the cloth, but do this no more than is necessary to get the top strained into the hollows. Imitation leather can go directly over the foam filling. A better effect is obtained for woven cloth covering by using an inner covering of unbleached calico or something similar first. The underside of a webbing seat can be finished with a piece of cloth. Turn its edges in a tack it to the frame. Usually, tacking for this and top cloth is kept far enough in to clear the recesses into which the seat has to fit.

If the new covering material is a very different thickness from the old, check the fit before fixing any material in case the seat has to be planned down or packed out or packed out with cardboard. Loose chair cushions have their coverings sewn inside out. However, part of a seam in the most inconspicuous place has to be sewn from the right side, after the pad has been inserted. In some cases there is a zip fastener. If padding has to be replaced and there is no zip, look around the edges of the back of the cushion for a different stitch pattern. There may be hand stitches or the turned in edges may be drawn together and machine-stitched from the outside. These are the stitches to unpick so that you can take out the old filling and replace it.

If the covers are removable and the fabric is suitable, you can have the covers dry cleaned by professionals, or you can do it yourself in a coin operated dry cleaning machine. Some fabrics must be cleaned by reliable cleaning services, especially pile fabrics such as plush or velvet. These firms will also be able to advise you if you are unsure about the proper cleaning procedure for a particular piece of upholstered furniture.

Leather: this can be cleaned after dusting, by using saddle soap, following the maker’s instructions, or with thick suds made from mild, pure soap and as little water as possible. Wipe the suds off with a damp cloth and polish with a soft, dry cloth. You should keep leather supple by using a good quality furniture cream or hide food on it once or twice a year.

It is surprising how many people forget to pay attention to their upholstered chairs and sofas. Dust settles on and is ground into all fabrics, dulling the colors and wearing the fibers. Upholstered furniture is expensive and will last much longer if carried for.

    Materials commonly used in upholstery

Leather: Probably the most expensive material

Wool: Mosquette is a looped-pile fabric usually with the loops uncut; flame resistant wool is treated to resist flaring, burning.

Cotton and linen: Used primarily for upholstery and loose covers.

Velvet: May be pure cotton, but is more likely to be a blend of acrylic, polyester and cotton. Acrylic may also be woven.

Brocade: Usually a blend of viscose and acetate. Old brocade may be silk.

Tapestry: A firm woven fabric containing wool and probably polyester.

Tweed: Usually wool with a smaller quantity of synthetic such as polyester.

Plastic: Usually vinyl, often made to imitate leather.

Rub with metal polish in the direction of the grain. For cigarette burns, try rubbing with fine steel wool followed by linseed oil. Alcohol is also effective. Wine and spirit marks can be removed at once. How? Light marks may be removed with cigarette ash and linseed oil, and then polished. Sticky marks can be removed using a well wrung cloth, rub with a solution of vinegar and warm water. If scratches and dents are small then they can be disguised with iodine, shoe polish or commercial scratch cover polish. Be sure to polish regularly. Dents may come out if you carefully use a warm iron over a damp cloth on them. Regular treatment with scratch cover polish will remove the fades due to sunlight.

These are a luxury. Few people really need one, except perhaps those with a very large family of small children and those who have to entertain frequently. Indeed, many of the kitchens are not large enough to take one most must be plumbed in take up quite a lot of space. However, let us dispel some myths about them, if you really are considering one. They are quicker than doing the dishes by hand. You could only stack them in the time it takes to load and unload your machine.

They do cope with pans and backing trays, and they certainly get most if not all the food off. They are more hygienic than doing the operation by hand because the water used is so much hotter than your hands could bear. They dispense with the need for tea cloths, too. They will wash almost anything, but care should be taken with cutlery that has handles attached with animal glue, some types of glass ware and some plastics if in doubt, do these by hand. Dishwashers, however, can be expensive to buy. Add to that plumbing and running costs and they can be an expensive luxury. If your circumstances are such that you feel that having more time is more essential than wasting endless hours washing up, you might consider one. But take a careful look at the whole range before deciding. Size and noise are two priorities; some machines only take four place settings, others are noisy.

What is there to choose from? You probably won’t want to do away with your general light but could it be gentler? There are diffuser shades for strip lights, and paper globes and glass and plastic bowl-type shades which make sure you can’t see the glaring bulb from below. Frosted glass light bulbs can help. Table or standard lamps with opaque shades, and spotlights and desk lamps will give direct light, but if you point a spotlight at a wall or ceiling it will give a much gentler and wide spread illumination. Or you could train it on a collection or item that you want to highlight. If it’s a picture, you may find non-reflecting glass is necessary.

This brings us to the question of direction do you want your light in one direction permanently, or should it be flexible? If so, make sure your lamps, etc. is tough enough to stand up to being altered regularly. Another aspect of flexibility is that it’s easy to replace your on/off switch with a dimmer, so you can turn your lights from bright to a soft glow. Unless your lamp specifically requires low wattage, always have bright bulbs. Fluorescent tubes should not produce a green or bluish light they will make you look ill. They are also bad for your eyes if used alone. There are varieties of diffuser shades you can buy for them under and behind ledges. A rise and fall pendant lamp fittings, where you can adjust the height of your light, can be useful and effective over a table, although for a really romantic light you can’t beat candles.

All too often lighting is limited to a single dangling bulb and lampshade; yet it has an enormously important and all pervading effect on your house. No matter how good your decorating is, if the light is bad a room will look uninteresting. Good lighting can transform a very ordinary setting. What is good lighting then? Again, there’s no straight answer; it will depend on your personal needs. Clever use of light and shadows can appear to alter the shape of your rooms; a ceiling that is too high can be brought down by remaining shadowy, while wall lights appear to increase your space. Leave your room’s deficiencies in the shade and high-light its good points. An even all-over light can be depressing areas of light and shadow will give interest. Plan where you’ll need light, what sort and how much.

Apart from the usual bedside light, this will mean considering where you do the mending, pay the bills, and listen to records and so on. Then make sure the switches and sockets are where you need them. If they’re not and you can’t afford or aren’t allowed to do any electrical work, look for standard lamps with adjustable spotlights, use the central ceiling outlet for a track with a number of spots, or use extension leads from skirting sockets. You could have a long flex from that outlet with a lamp attached to the end, and loop the flex over a hook, perhaps above the coffee table.

You may think that lights inside cupboards are too much of a luxury but a spotlight could be angled to shine into them. In a child’s room make sure that the fittings are out of reach, and use safety plugs and childproof sockets. You will need stronger light for an elderly person. Lights should not shine on to mirrors or they’ll shadow the bags under your eyes. Reading lights should shine down over your shoulder, and ideally should be used in conjunction with a background light to avoid glare. If you’re right-handed you will need it come over your left shoulder. For dining, watching television and for stairways, make sure no one’s dazzled by low lights for other activities low level lighting can be affective and look very glamorous.
